Due to the unknown origin or location of any emergency, only general evacuation guidelines can be given.
With limited mass transportation facilities within the Borough of Mountain Lakes, the majority of full-scale evacuation plans will consist of the use of personally owned vehicles (P.O.V.) on public roadways.
The following is a list of suggested routes in the case of evacuation based on the recommended direction of travel.
- Evacuation to the East State Highway 46 East will be the primary easterly evacuation route. Once on State Highway 46, a number of other roadways can be utilized for travel in this direction, including I 80 East and State Highway 10 East.
- Evacuation to the West State Highway 46 West and North Pocono Road west will be our primary westerly routes of travel. Secondary routing in a northwesterly direction can be utilized via Powerville/Rockaway Valley Road in Boonton Township.Evacuation to the East or West can also be accomplished through the use of, on a limited basis, N.J. Transit rail and bus, as well as Lakeland Bus.
- Evacuation to the North The use of I 287 North would be our most expeditious route to the north. Once again, travel in this direction can also be accomplished via Boonton Township roadways and Boonton Avenue in Boonton, to State Highway 23 North.Access to the north can be accomplished via the Boulevard, Morris Avenue and Intervale Road.
- Evacuation to the South I 287 South will be the primary evacuation route in this direction with State Highway 53 as the only viable alternative. Interior Borough roadways to access these routes would be the Boulevard, Morris Avenue and Intervale Road.
- Local Evacuations Evacuations of smaller scale which may involve only local streets, homes or neighborhoods will be determined by the Chief of Police or designee, such as the police officer in charge (O.I.C.).
The Borough does not possess specialized transportation ability.
