About the Department
The Department of Public Works, located at 55 Pocono Road, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the public infrastructure. This includes the borough’s roads, curbs and sidewalks; the storm water management and sanitary sewer collection systems; the water distribution system and interconnections with neighboring towns; and the borough’s recreation venues and public parks. The department, in conjunction with the police and fire departments, is an integral part of the emergency management team, and is responsible for implementation of any necessary emergency response. The Recycling Center is located at the Department of Public Works.
The Borough maintains 22 miles of roads, which includes cleaning, clearing, snow plowing, and rehabilitation of road surfaces; maintenance and repair of storm sewer systems, drains and culverts; and the installation and maintenance of street markings and signs. The Sanitary Sewer Utility plans and programs for the maintenance and improvements of the public sewer services within the Borough. Waste water from the Borough is treated at the Parsippany Sewer Treatment Plant.
The Mountain Lakes Water System is a groundwater based system, with water supplied by 4 wells. Ground water is stored below the surface in aquifers and is purified naturally as it filters through layers of soil, clay, rock and sand in a process known as percolation. Well 5 located on Route 46 is the largest water producer. To ensure the water serving the community is of the highest quality, the Water Department monitors and tests for physical, chemical and bacterial contaminants. The Department is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the distribution system, and flushes the water mains on an annual basis.
The Recycling Center is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7:30am to 2:30pm. Drop off areas for household recyclables and organic waste are marked. The borough holds two bulky trash collection programs each year, typically the 3rd Saturday in April and October. (Please check Borough Calendar to confirm dates.)
