Boiling Spring
This small spring, back in the woods, has significant flow in the springtime so that the water seems to boil and percolate. It’s an interesting spot but it has no known significant history or anecdotes associated with it. If you look closely at the bottom of the pool, you can often see bubbles appearing from the sandy bottom and percolating to the water’s surface causing a steady ripple effect.
How to get there
Start at the Tourne parking lot by the ballfield. Turn left out of the parking lot and go several hundred feet to the beginning of the Birchwood Lake Trail, which bears off to the left marked by white blazes. Follow this trail approximately 0.4 mile to a major intersection with trails going left and right (GPS 40.904566,-74.442713). Turn right and follow the pink trail, exiting Mountain Lakes and entering the Denville side of the Tourne. After about 0.2 miles, you come to an intersection with the teal trail branching left and the pink trail continuing to the right. Go left to stay on the teal trail. Continue on for about 0.1 miles to a small narrow trail veering downhill and off to the left. Follow this down to boiling spring. You’ll see the spring surrounded by rocks and a nearby wooden bench. Sit down and enjoy the quiet and peace of the spot.
