New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Fire Restriction
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Fire Restriction
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued mandatory statewide Stage 3 fire restrictions due to persistent dry conditions and increased wildfire risks. The restrictions ban all wood and charcoal fires, including kerosene or gas torches. Only fires contained in elevated stoves using propane, natural gas, or electricity are permitted. This ban applies to all public and private lands across New Jersey.
Stage 3 Fire Restrictions were implemented due to extremely dry conditions and are aimed at preventing wildfires, especially given forecasted winds over 20 mph and low humidity levels.
Enhanced Wildfire Monitoring: The Forest Fire Service has heightened vigilance, deploying additional aerial resources and increasing watchfulness from fire towers to monitor for potential wildfires.
High Fire Risk Indicators: Weather readings and fire indices, including the drought index, are signaling near-record dry conditions. For example, the Lebanon Fire Tower is recording a drought index of 725 out of 800, indicating extreme dryness.
Proactive Measures and Safety Tips: Residents are advised to avoid discarding smoking materials on the ground, use wood stoves and fireplaces cautiously, and maintain yard equipment to prevent sparks.
